Abegunde (Bloomington, Indiana) - HHEW '07
Maria Eliza Hamilton Abegunde (Osunbimpe Abegunde) is an egungun (ancestral) priest in the Yoruba Orisa tradition and Reiki Master with a focus on the recovery of ancestral memory from the Earth and human body. She is also a poet, writer, and teacher. Her ongoing research is on embodied memory of the Middle Passage, the ways in which unresolved ancestral emotions shape the lives of descendents, and the links between ancestral wounding and urban youth violence. Abegunde is a doctoral candidate in African American and African Diaspora Studies at Indiana University, Bloomington, with a concentration in Memory Studies and a geographical interest in Brasil (Bahia).

Necola Adams (Merced, California) - HHEW '06
Past president of the League of Women Voters, Merced County (LWVMC). Past 2nd vice president for the National Council of Negro Women Merced Chapter. Past commissioner for the City of Merced Parks and Recreation Department. Former owner of Mrs. Adam's Gourmet Cookies "the cookies with an attitude." I have volunteered in the Merced city schools for over eighteen years reading with students. I led the fight for getting a book containing adult graphic material removed from not only our city school, but also our high school district. Currently I am serving as a board member for the LWVMC, and am writing a book on marriage and children. I have been married for twenty years. My husband and I have raised five children, and are currently raising two grandchildren.
Linda Bailey-Jefferson (Walnut Creek, California) - HHEW '13
Linda was born in Washington DC at Walter Reed Army Hospital on the 4 of July. She is the oldest of seven. Her father was a weather man in the United States Air Force. This caused the family to move every two years or so for many years throughout the United States and over seas. Linda was a double major at California State University San Bernardino and earned her BA in Psychology and in Communications. She also earned an AA in Electronic Engineering at ITT Technical Institute. Now Linda is an entrepreneur working in the real estate, mortgage and insurance industry. Linda works hard to build a better future for her son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren. She also loves to go biking, swimming, doing yoga, reading and learning new things.
Melyssa Barrett (Tracy, California) - HHEW '07
Melyssa Barrett has been with Visa since 1989 and currently leads Global Business Intelligence at Visa Inc. Barrett is responsible for the development and management of intelligence solutions to support client financial institutions and merchants. Solutions include consumer level data solutions that span the account lifecycle for issuers in account origination, account management, and collections and also now extend into providing value to acquirers and merchants. Barrett first joined Visa as a point-of -sale representative, providing support to Visa issuers and merchants through the Visa point-of-sale help desk. Prior to Visa, she held positions in retail banking at Wells Fargo and a variety of management positions in collections, credit risk, bankruptcy, and specialty programs at Citibank. A 28-year veteran, Barrett has served as a member of the Board of Directors for the American Bankruptcy Institute and currently serves on the Board of Directors for Consumer Credit Counseling Service of San Francisco and the Advisory Council Member of the National Foundation for Credit Counseling, She is currently the President of the Tracy Performing Arts Foundation, an organization dedicated to the building and nurturing the performing arts. Barrett holds a BS degree in Business Administration.
Peter Barrett (Tracy, California) - HHEW '07 ("We thank you and remember you.")
Peter was the founder of Jali Enterprises and an "oral tradition" storyteller who brought education and entertainment to audiences of all ages. While Peter specialized in cultural genealogy and world history, he also used his talents as a radio producer, disc jockey, voice over and performing artist. His passion for educating audiences on African American culture and history continued to drive his personal and professional outreach into the community.
In February 2017, the annual winter lecture series of our Ebony-In-Action Keynote Speakers Bureau was officially renamed the Peter Barrett Winter Lecture Series in honor of his memory.

Jacqueline E. Brown, M.A. (Las Vegas, Nevada) - HHEW '11
Born in Petersburg, VA and raised in New York, I moved to Las Vegas in the 80's. I am the principal of an intermediate (3rd through 5th grade) elementary school and have worked as a lead teacher for HeadStart and a classroom teacher in grades kindergarten, first, third and fourth. I received my Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from the University of Pennsylvania and my Master's degree in Educational Leadership and Higher Education from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. I am a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and currently serve as president of the Las Vegas chapter.
Carolyn B. Buck, PhD (Bakersfield, California) - HHEW '08
Carolyn’s career in education spans over 30 years, of which 24 were in post-secondary education. Carolyn’s career has progressed from director to coordinator of support services for ethnic and culturally diverse student, to assistant director in Student Affairs and then a move into the two-year colleges as a faculty and administrator. Her experience in educational has covered the breadth and scope of the educational system from early childhood to adult education. She completed her doctoral study in the Claremont Graduate University joint doctoral program with San Diego State University. She has done further study at Fielding Graduate University in Evidence Based Coaching as well as numerous continuing study and presentations related to diversity and equity training, learning outcomes, conflict management, mediation, supervision and organizational development. Currently, she spends her time providing academic, life, leadership and career coaching as she builds a professional coaching business in southern California, participates in international missions and educational endeavors in support of equity and access. In order to reduce stress she maintains a regular yoga practice and mindful meditation. She believes that we must actively work to change one person at a time, starting with ourselves.

I am an experienced Organizational Effectiveness (HR) professional with over 20 years of experience in the strategic design of employee benefits and HR policies, leadership effectiveness, and operations. I’m employed by a top Fortune 500 company and I specialize in employee benefits and account management. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Business Management and a Master’s degree in Organizational Management. I also have my life agent license from the state of California and I’m a member of the Society for Human Resources Management, Professionals in Human Resources Association, and various other national advisory groups.
My greatest joy in life has been being a parent and raising my two sons. Because my sons are active in sports, I enjoy sporting events including basketball and football. I am also an avid jazz enthusiast and I enjoy running, exercising, and bowling. Additionally, I’m an active supporter of local and national causes that seek to prevent social, economic, and racial injustices.

I am a railroad transportation supervisor who graduated from St.Paul's College in Lawrenceville, Va. I am a member of Omega Psi Phi fraternity and one of the original members of HHEW. It is my dream to assist Dr. Hilton in growing HHEW into an international black think tank to assist our people in obtaining true equality in the 21st century.
