William A. Delaney (Baltimore, Maryland) - HHEW '13
Studied behavior modification and social learning theory at San Francisco State University because of what I saw and learned as a police officer in the late 1960s, early years in Roanoke, Virginia’s segregated schools and travels abroad. I was inspired to plan, design and implement the Bayview Hunters Point College (CA), to teach poor, disadvantaged youth what I knew. With assistance from social agencies, community leaders and politicians, I developed educational, entrepreneurial, and athletic programs for the poorest residents of Southeast San Francisco in efforts to raise insights of residents of my community from where they were to where they wanted to or were capable of being. Since that time I have continued my research, compared my observations and tested my hypothesis to meet needs as a teacher and advocate for positive change. In writing, my goal is to continue sharing what I have learned from a lifetime of challenging experiences. I asked of myself what I want to do in coming years and concluded: “Paint a picture with words that uplift my community and the world!” I sense anxiety, fear, confusion and lack of effort to understand how we got ourselves into the mess we are in. Now we want to bypass controversy, while controversy got us into the mess and is what is needed to break us free of ties that bind us to failure to face reality that is needed to free us from media, political and religion induced nonsense.
